Suspect indicted in DUI crash that killed woman crossing the street
A Birmingham woman has been indicted in a 2017 DUI crash that killed another woman who was crossing the street on the way to the store.
A Jefferson County grand jury issued the manslaughter indictment against Chantera Janae Bell, 27, on Friday, according to court records made public Tuesday. She was initially charged with reckless murder in the March 27, 2017 death of 35-year-old LaToya P. Brown.
The crash happened at 12:07 a.m. that Monday at Sixth Avenue South and First Street. Authorities said Brown, who lived nearby, was walking in the northbound lane when she was struck by a Hyundai Elantra that was traveling eastbound.
