Alabama teacher arrested for being drunk in class, authorities say

A Tanner High School teacher is jailed for being drunk in class today, authorities said.

Mae Gladys Edwards, a 40-year-old family and consumer science teacher, was charged today with public intoxication and illegal possession of prohibited liquors. Both are misdemeanors.

A Limestone County sheriff’s school resource officer arrested Edwards just after 1 p.m. today, said Stephen Young, a sheriff’s spokesman. School officials and the resource officer started investigating after student reported the teacher was behaving oddly.

Young said a liquor bottle was found near the teacher’s desk.
