A longtime Carteret County deputy resigned this week after crashing a county vehicle while allegedly impaired by a prescription medication.

James Willis was charged with driving while impaired following the Monday night wreck on Shell Road in the Atlantic community in the Down East area of the county, according to a news release issued Wednesday by the sheriff’s office.
