Driver charged with DWI in crash that injured state trooper

A 10-year veteran of Missouri State Highway Patrol is in serious condition after he was hit by an alleged drunk driver while trying to conduct a traffic stop Sunday morning on Interstate 55.

It happened at about 8:30 a.m. just north of the Reavis Barracks exit in south county. Police say the trooper was getting out of his patrol car when a vehicle headed southbound on I-55 hit the patrol car, which hit the trooper. Authorities say the driver — identified as 43-year-old Michael Haley– did stop and cooperated with the investigation. He was taken to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries, and has since been charged with two counts of second degree assault and driving while intoxicated.
