Lawmakers push to increase DUI penalties

First-time drunk drivers could be forced to take a breath test every time they start their car under a bill being considered by lawmakers eager to respond to a series of shocking fatal accidents involving repeat drunk drivers.


More than 5,600 ignition interlock devices were installed in Pennsylvania last year, said Stephen Enri, executive director of the PA DUI Association. Requiring the devices after a first offense would dramatically increase that number.
