Michael Phelps gets suspended sentence for drunk driving

American swimming great Michael Phelps received the maximum one year in prison for drunk driving, although he will avoid time behind bars because the judge suspended that sentence in favor of 18 months of supervised probation, U.S. media reported.

The 29-year-old athlete, winner of a record 18 Olympic gold medals, was arrested on Sept. 30 in Maryland while speeding and driving with a blood-alcohol level that was nearly double the legal limit.
